Individual Digital Photography Lessons With Mark Holmes

I have been teaching photography classes in San Diego since 2007 and am the author of Digital SLR Photography for Dummies eLearning Kit. For people who have a busy schedule and just can't make my regular workshops, I offer individual and private digital photography classes in San Diego, tailored to your specific needs. Please book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

My digital photography classes are aimed at people who don't like to read camera manuals or don't want to sit at a computer to learn digital photography. Sometimes you may have a particular problem that you can't seem to find or understand the answer to. Maybe you aren't happy with your photographs in general and could use some encouragement and positive criticism. In these cases, nothing can replace individual tuition.

Some of the people I have taught individually range from people who just want to learn their new camera, to professionals who need to improve their digital photography skills.

The subject varies depending on your needs as a photographer and I am happy to discuss with you a lesson or course of classes that best work for you. Some of the subjects I have taught include:

  • Getting to know Nikon, Canon, Sony, Olympus, Leica, Lumix, Leica and Pentax cameras, whether DSLR, mirrorless or point-and-shoot.
  • Outdoor portraits or studio lighting
  • Off-camera flash
  • Infant and family photography
  • Travel and wildlife photography
  • Event photography
  • Sports and animal photography
  • Low light photography

DSLR Techniques and Controls

Digital Photography Techniques

Get out of AUTO and start to use your camera to its full potential.

This workshop is the second in the series designed to help you become a better digital photographer. You will learn to set the five elements of control: autofocus, shutter, aperture, ISO and white balance.

This two-hour classs on DSLR photography is held regularly in San Diego. It is suitable for digital photographers who may be new to DSLRs or who would like to understand how to take better pictures with their camera. It is a practical class and usually takes place in Balboa park. All camera classes are kept small, with a mximum of ten attendees, though usually fewer, and all DSLRs are welcome. Users of mirrorless or micro 4:3 cameras will also find this class useful. If you are looking for a camera class that really kick-starts your knowledge of photography, this is it.

  • Getting to know your DSLR allows you to use it to its full potential.
  • Focusing your camera properly will allow you to capture sports or still life.
  • Knowing about shutter speeds and apertures allows you to get creative with your photography.

This workshop teaches you the controls of your camera and how to combine settings for different looks in your pictures.

Subjects include:

  • Autofocus settings
  • Understanding Apertures, shutter speeds, ISO
  • White balance choices
  • Setting apertures and shutter speeds for different effects
  • Shooting with different aperture and shutter speed combinations

Workshop format

This is a two-hour workshop. We will meet in fun locations around San Diego with a range of shooting subjects. Each workshop starts with an explanation of the lesson plan, in which we discuss what we are trying to achieve that day. We will then all work on a number of practical exercises with short breaks for explanation and summaries. At the end of the workshop we will come together to discuss what we have learned. The workshop is based on the contents of Digital SLR eLearning Kit For Dummies with additional exercises and information. Class sizes are small to enhance your learning experience.
